Lecture, three to four hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to alter society in profound ways and to transform our understanding of what it is to be human. Introduction to philosophical questions raised by AI. Central among them is whether AI systems genuinely think or merely simulate thinking, and whether they can be creative, feel emotions, or be conscious. Study compares AI with human capacities for perception, reasoning, and social cognition. Ethical issues include the guidelines software engineers should follow in designing AI, the obligations owed to AI systems and to one another in using them, and the ways AI might reshape our conception of a just society. Drawing on philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and ethics, students gain the resources to think through the social, political, ethical, and metaphysical implications of AI research.
