Grades

3.74

Average grade awarded in ENGL 90. Not a student rating: this is what the grades were.

In the A range

83%

of the 494 letter grades

D, F or W

2.8%

of every letter grade awarded, plus withdrawals

Taken pass/no pass

8%

93% of those passed

The registrar's own records: 494 grades over 8 terms, Fall 2021 to Fall 2025. No summer session is in that record. Every instructor is pooled here. The table below splits them, and term averages across those 8 terms ran 3.62 to 3.86.

  • A+ 79 · 16.0%
  • A 239 · 48.4%
  • A- 94 · 19.0%
  • B+ 48 · 9.7%
  • B 9 · 1.8%
  • B- 6 · 1.2%
  • C+ 5 · 1.0%
  • C 3 · 0.6%
  • D+ 3 · 0.6%
  • D 1 · 0.2%
  • D- 2 · 0.4%
  • F 5 · 1.0%
  • P 38 of 538
  • NP 3 of 538
  • DR 3 of 538

Percentages are of the 494 letter grades. Grey bars are non-letter outcomes: passes (P), no-passes (NP), and withdrawals (DR). They are excluded from the GPA entirely rather than scored, because counting a P as a 4.0 would be a fabrication. Withdrawals are the exception to "excluded": DR is not scored, but it IS counted in the D, F or W figure above, which is reported over the letter grades plus the withdrawals. Pass/no pass and S/U outcomes are outside that figure on both sides.

By instructor

Predicted GPA, raw average, sample size, terms, A range and the workload reviewers reported for every instructor with a grade record in this course
Instructor Predicted GPA Raw n Terms A range Workload Fall 2026
LITTLE, ARTHUR L reviews ↗ 3.81 3.81 228 4 87% - not teaching it
WATSON, ROBERT N reviews ↗ 3.69 3.68 203 3 78% light not teaching it
LITTLE, ARTHUR L, JR reviews ↗ 3.65 3.62 63 1 86% - not teaching it

“Predicted” is shrunk toward the course average, which is itself shrunk toward the department, so an instructor with a handful of students sits near the course mean rather than topping the list.

dibs measures outcomes: grades, seats, how fast a class fills. For what a class is like to sit in, BruinWalk has the reviews.

Reviews for ENGL 90

What comes first

The chain dibs can see is 1 course long before ENGL 90. This is a floor, not a deadline: dibs has not read a class page for ENGCOMP 2, so the real chain can only be longer than this, never shorter.

Counted in courses rather than quarters: dibs does not know which of them a department lets you take together.

In Falls

Ran in 4 of the last 5 Falls.

From the terms dibs holds, which start in Fall 2021 and exclude summer. A department can run a course in a quarter it never has before.

From the registrar's catalog

Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Enforced requisite: satisfaction of Entry-Level Writing requirement. Not open for credit to English majors or students with credit for course 150A or 150B. Survey of Shakespeare's plays, including comedies, tragedies, and histories, selected to represent Shakespeare's breadth, artistic progress, and total dramatic achievement. P/NP or letter grading.

Sections in Fall 2026

You enroll in the discussion, not the lecture, so a discussion's status is the one that decides whether you get in. A lecture can read open while every discussion under it is full.

Seat counts as of : the oldest of these 5 readings. The registrar publishes hourly and dibs reads what it can each hour, so a row can be older than that.

Final enrollment, averaged across each term's sections: between 40 and 85 a term over 8 terms, summer excluded, most recently 40 in Fall 2025. That is the shape across years, not this term, which is above.

Where the line is flat across an hour dibs did read, the count held: that is checked and unchanged, rather than nobody having looked. For 142 hours dibs was keeping a record and did not reach this section. Nothing before 25 August at 00:00, where this section's record starts, has a read either way, which is 180 hours of this window. A hedged line never means the readings are doubtful. It means the stretch between them is unaccounted for.
