Grades
3.61
Average grade awarded in FRNCH 1. Not a student rating: this is what
the grades were.
The mean of every letter grade the registrar has published for this course, pooled across every instructor who has taught it. It is not shrunk toward anything, because a course average cannot be pulled toward itself. Standard error 0.022.
In the A range
The share who got an A minus or better: A+, A or A minus, out of every letter grade awarded in this course. Pass/no pass outcomes are counted separately and are not in this figure.
74%
of the 807 letter grades
D, F or W
The share who finished with a D or an F, or withdrew. The closest thing here to a difficulty signal: it counts the people the course went badly for, which an average grade hides. Pass/no pass and S/U outcomes are counted separately and are not in this figure, so a no-pass is not in it either.
3.0%
of every letter grade awarded, plus withdrawals
Taken pass/no pass
The share who took this pass/no pass rather than for a letter grade. A high number usually means it is popular as a GE with people protecting an average. These students are excluded from the figure at the top of this block.

The registrar's own records: 807 grades over 13 terms, Fall 2021 to Fall 2025.
Every instructor is pooled here.

3 of those terms are summer sessions, and summer sessions are counted here.
The table below splits them, and term averages across those 13 terms ran 3.22 to 3.78.

Percentages are of the 15 letter grades. Grey bars are non-letter outcomes: passes (P).
›iHow the non-letter outcomes are counted
They are excluded from the GPA entirely rather than scored, because counting a P as a
4.0 would be a fabrication.

›iWhy Predicted is not the Raw average
“Predicted” is shrunk toward the course average, which is itself shrunk toward the
department, so an instructor with a handful of students sits near the course mean rather
than topping the list.
Grade records describe outcomes. For what a course is like to take, read student reviews
written on dibs below or follow the separate external review link.
Work types reported in BruinWalk reviews of this course, across recorded instructors and terms. They may differ from this term's syllabus.
dibs has not read this course’s reviews, so it cannot say what kind of work it sets.
That is dibs not having looked. It is not a course without papers or exams, and the reviews
linked below are the answer until dibs catches up.
From the terms dibs holds, which start in Fall 2021 and exclude summer.
A department can run a course in a quarter it never has before.
From the registrar's catalog

Seat counts as of : the oldest of these 6 readings. Seat readings are snapshots, not live availability. Their timestamps show when dibs last checked.
Students who have never had high school French may enroll in French 1 without first taking the placement examination. Students with one or more years of high school French MUST present a placement examination score on the first day of class. The department placement examination is given online at https://ccle.ucla.edu/course/view/Frenchplacementexam, and must be taken in advance of course enrollment for all students with prior French instruction. Students must e-mail Dr. Nina Bjekovic at bjekovic@humnet.ucla.edu to request a password, using "French Online Placement Examination Password" as the subject heading. Students who have taken the AP examination and received a score of 3 or higher need not take the departmental placement examination but should consult the UCLA General Catalog for credit equivalencies. They can also contact Dr. Laurence Denie-Higney at laurence@humnet.ucla.edu. Transfer students who have had French at another college should check their degree audit report for credit equivalencies granted on admission (see counselors in A316 Murphy Hall or call 310-825-3382). They can also contact Dr. Laurence Denie-Higney at laurence@humnet.ucla.edu.

How each lecture has filled since dibs first saw it.
This course runs 5 lectures; the legend under the chart picks one.
A dot is a reading where something moved: the seat count, the status, or the waitlist.
›iWhat a flat run means, and where a line starts
Flat between dots means it did not drift, it held and then jumped, and a line starts when
dibs first saw that lecture rather than reaching back before it existed. A lecture that
has never moved draws a flat line across the whole window, and one with two or three
readings draws a line joining them, which is too few to read a trend from.

Seats from 17 Aug 15:07 to 1 Oct 21:22, 28 to 28. The line is flat across the whole window: recorded enrollment counts match. Changes between reads may be missed. dibs read 168 of the 641 hours its hourly record here covers, 26%. An hour marked as read confirms a check, not continuous monitoring. That check recorded no change; changes between checks may be missed. For 473 hours dibs was keeping a record and did not reach this section. Nothing before 5 September at 05:00, where this section's record starts, has a read either way, which is 446 hours of this window. Where the drawing is faint or broken, that never means the readings are doubtful. It means the stretch between them is unaccounted for.

›iHow readings and alerts work
A reading and an hourly record are different things, and most charts here hold more of the second missing than present. dibs has taken readings of a section since long before it began keeping an hour-by-hour log of when it looked, so the empty stretches are dibs saying it was not keeping that log yet, not that it looked and found nothing. That is the age of the record and not a fault.
Seat counts show the last successful read, not live availability. Refreshes can be delayed by request limits or upstream interruptions. Watched sections receive priority, but an hourly update for every section is not guaranteed.
The registrar can change a seat count between our checks. Alerts depend on dibs detecting an opening and completing delivery; a quiet watch does not prove that no seat opened. Check the registrar before enrolling.
