CLUSTER 10A

Data, Justice, and Society

Sections & times

This is a year, not a class

Clusters run across three quarters, fall, winter, then the spring seminar, and UCLA counts the credit on completing the yearlong cluster: four GE requirements and the Writing II requirement. Signing up for the first quarter is signing up for the year.

  1. 10A: you are here
  2. 10B
  3. 10CW
  4. 10WX

Dibs only reads Winter 2027, so the later parts show no sections here: that is this term, not the sequence ending. What you keep if you take only part of a cluster is a question for the Cluster Program, not something these numbers answer.

Grades

3.90

Average grade awarded in CLUSTER 10A. Not a student rating: this is what the grades were.

In the A range

94%

D, F or W

0.2%

of every letter grade awarded, plus withdrawals

Taken pass/no pass

0%

nobody in the record took it pass/no pass

The registrar's own records: 570 grades over 3 terms, Fall 2021 to Fall 2025. Every instructor is pooled here.

What is inside that record

No summer session is in that record.

The table below splits them, and term averages across those 3 terms ran 3.81 to 3.95.

Historical grades for all professors, across recorded terms. The course summary above includes all professors.

  • A+ 185 · 32.5%
  • A 267 · 46.8%
  • A- 82 · 14.4%
  • B+ 20 · 3.5%
  • B 11 · 1.9%
  • B- 3 · 0.5%
  • C+ 1 · 0.2%
  • D+ 1 · 0.2%
  • I 1 of 571

Percentages are of the 570 letter grades. Grey bars are non-letter outcomes: incompletes (I).

How the non-letter outcomes are counted

They are excluded from the GPA entirely rather than scored, because counting a P as a 4.0 would be a fabrication.

By instructor

Predicted GPA, raw average, sample size, terms, A range and the workload reviewers reported for every instructor with a grade record in this course
Instructor Predicted GPA Raw n Terms A range Workload Winter 2027
PRESNER, TODD S reviews ↗ 3.90 3.90 570 3 94% very light not teaching it

WILLIAMS, JULIET A reviews ↗ 3.87 3.87 348 2 91% very light not teaching it
Why Predicted is not the Raw average

“Predicted” is shrunk toward the course average, which is itself shrunk toward the department, so an instructor with a handful of students sits near the course mean rather than topping the list.

Grade records describe outcomes. For what a course is like to take, read student reviews written on dibs below or follow the separate external review link.

What the work looks like

  • No exams, said by 1 reviewer

Lecture, three hours; discussion, two hours. Course 10A is requisite to 10B, which is requisite to 10CW or 10WX. Limited to first-year students. Data-based computation (i.e., algorithms, artificial intelligence, predictive modeling) increasingly play a dominant role in shaping everyday experiences of culture and society. Data and data analytics define everything from social relations and public policy to juridical status and market logistics. Introduction to politics, ethics, applications, history, critiques, and social impact of data.
